What is Science Olympiad?

Who Can Participate?

Science Olympiad offers interscholastic academic competition in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, problem solving, and technology. The state and national tournaments consist of a series of individual and team events, and there is a balance between events requiring knowledge of scientific facts, concepts, processes, skills, and science applications.

SCSO Growth

This year, the South Carolina Science Olympiad continues to encourage teams to get involved. Last year Covid-19 restrictions prevented the organization from hosting in-person tournaments. However, this year all divisions will be able to compete in-person at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. For additional experience and practice, we encourage teams to participate in invitationals. More information about these is located under Resources.
All South Carolina students in grades K-12 are invited to participate in a Regional Competition, hosted at either The Citadel or Newberry College. Top scoring teams will move onto the State Competition at The Citadel. The winner of each division will move onto the National Competition.

Learn More

Do you want to know more about how Science Olympiad works? The Citadel will host a STEM Competition Coach Training Day on Oct. 2, 2021. To register for this free, virtual event, go to the Calendar tab.
For 8 years I have coached students in Science Olympiad. It is a highlight of our school year and the lessons my students learn carry far beyond competition day. "

Sponsor SCSO

South Carolina Science Olympiad needs your support to continue recognizing and developing the best and brightest in the state. SCSO compliments and strengthens academic learning and competition, thereby creating an atmosphere of support and enthusiasm that is normally reserved for athletic programs in schools. Science Olympiad is a proven and effective program that creates a passion for participants, which leads them to degrees and careers in STEM.
It is our goal to find new sponsors who will partner with us so that we can continue to offer the high quality programs South Carolina has come to know and love.

If your company is interested in sponsoring SCSO, please contact Ashley Andrews, Assistant Director, The STEM Center of Excellence at The Citadel.

Thank you to our sponsors!
